Description
Filter tracking data to a time period and domain of interest, and create an animation. Compared to static maps, animations add the challenge of incorporating time, requiring thought about data availability over staggered deployments, seasonal movements, and the timing of movements near other features of interest. With this workflow, you can iteratively evaluate the spatio-temporal domain of the tracking dataset and create draft animations for customization in ECODATA (movebank.org/cms/movebank-content/ecodata). The workflow assumes little previous exploration of the data, and not all apps will be needed in all cases. First, access data from Movebank (Movebank Location). Then view the temporal spread of tracks (Track Summary Statistics) and reduce data to a desired time period (Filter/Annotate by Time Interval). Then view the spatial spread of tracks during this period with respect to geographic coordinates (Open Street Map), necessary to reduce the dataset to a desired region (Filter by Bounding Box). Review the resulting dataset on an interactive map in order to identify any tracks with unexpected results (Interactive Map (leaflet)) and remove any low-accuracy locations (Remove Outliers). Finally, create the animation (Animated Map) and export a csv of the filtered dataset (Write CSV). Remove the first Movebank Location App if evaluating data from a single study. To use the .csv export in ECODATA-Animate, rename three column headers: "individual_local_identifier" to individual-local-identifier, "coords_x" to location-long and "coords_y" to location-lat (removing quote marks). To persistently remove outliers and incorporate information to use for coloring tracks, such as herd names, make these additions directly in the study on Movebank (movebank.org/cms/movebank-content/upload-qc).
